Natural Remedies for Colds Natural Living Carnival

Welcome to the December 2012 Natural Living Blog Carnival: Natural Remedies. This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Natural Living Blog Carnival hosted by Happy Mothering and The Pistachio Project through the Green Moms Network. This month our members have written posts about how they use natural remedies in their homes.

It never fails.  Sometimes you can have a super clean diet, stay away from the processed foods, try and do everything right and your or a family member gets sick.  It's OK, the body is just working out something that is out of balance.  Sometimes what we eat is to blame, but other times its just natural eliminations of toxins built up and needing to be released.

In our house we like to take a Natural approach to allowing and assisting the body to rid itself of any imbalance.  Whether it's a fever, sniffles, sore throat, or throwing up, we take a step back and think about what the body is trying to tell us.  Our bodies are masterfully designed to heal and rebuild.  The body is constantly at work to keep in a balance of homeostasis, and the illness is a message that something is off balance.  When we get an illness, before rushing off to the Doctors to get a script we can allow and assist our body to heal naturally.  YES, there are times when a Doctor is needed and why they are there to help when natural approaches are not enough.  With that said, try these natural approaches I will be sharing with you, but know when it is time to see a physician if needed.

When one of us gets a runny nose we make an Ayurvedic Drink.  Ayurveda is a type of Indian Nutrition using herbs to heal the body.  They break it up in to wet, dry, hot, cold, and so on.  You can use certain herbs that have specific benefits to dry out, increase heat, decrease heat, and naturally heal.  When we get a runny nose we like to allow the body to detox what is going on and assist in drying it up. The first thing I tell my kids is when we are sick, we need to slow down, rest, and allow the body to heal.  At the first sign of a runny nose we make a Turmeric Warm Milk.
Turmeric Warm Milk
1 cup of Milk warmed slightly over the stove, NEVER in the microwave.
1 tsp of yellow turmeric spice, powder
1/2 tsp of cinnamon spice.
The milk is warmed, not heated or scalded.  Remove and placed in a tea cup, then add in both spices.  Turmeric is used to remove excess mucus in the body.  We usually will drink this in the morning and before bed, when the sinuses can be most bothersome.  The cinnamon is used to warm the body, it has a heating quality.  I love this drink and find wonderful relief from an stuffy or runny noses.

Ear Infections and Pain
2 tbsp. of coconut oil
1 clove garlic chopped, crushed
For painful earaches take a small sauce pan and add about 2 tbsp of coconut oil, or Olive Oil, to the pan and just heat until warm, remove from heat. And 1 clove of chopped or minced garlic to the warm oil and allow to cool enough that it does not burn, but still warm (Test against you wrist).  Strain the garlic out.  You can drop a few drops of the oil into the ear and lay on your side to allow the oil to flow slowly down the canal.  Then gently message the outer ear area.   I then place a cotton ball in the oil and saturate it, then squeeze the oil out.  Then place the oiled ball in the ear. The cotton ball keeps the oil in the ear and blocks any cold wind from annoying the sensitive ear canal.  I will make balls and place in a plastic baggy for the kids to take to school. It provides a great deal of comfort and healing power from the garlic oil.  This was a remedy my grandmother shared with me and was passed from hers.
When colds set in with little ones it is important to keep their hands clean.  Not only from keeping the germs from spreading to others around the house or classroom, but to keep from an eye infection.  Pink Eye tends to always rear its ugly head around cold and flu season.  This is because kids rub their noses with their hands and then later rub their itchy watery eyes.  The germs get in the eyes and now we have pink eye as well.

Ginger root for the throat.
When I have a sore throat one of the first things I pick up is fresh ginger root.  I sometimes will make a soft cough drop if my throat is dry, sore, or tickles.  On one spoon I add half a tsp of raw honey and then juice of ginger.  I have a press I use to juice the ginger right onto the spoon and then swallow.  This is thick and coats my throat while the ginger cleans it.

Have a cold? Make a Tea with a purpose.
When we have colds we literally drink them away.  I love the quality of herbal teas and think we should hydrate and pushes these toxins out.  Why not enjoy and great tasting and comforting tea to help that?
Thyme: Thyme is an internal remedy for inflammations and infections.  A cup of Thyme tea will ease headaches, nervousness, and helps with queasy stomachs. While a great spice it is also antiseptic.  Whenever I make a soup or stew I throw some thyme in and when we have a cold I make a tea out of it.  You can also gargle with the Thyme when you have Strep Throat and sore throat.
Ginger:  Ginger has been used in folk medicine to aid in digestion, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.  It is also used to purify the liver and blood which helps to rid the body of illness and toxins.
Pine:  I love making this tea.  We have grabbed fresh pine right from the trees and made a steam for congestion and then drink the tea to give our bodies a higher dose of Vitamin A and C.  To make the tea or steam, just boil a quart of water and add in a handful of pine needles.  Remove from heat.  Grab a towel to place over your head and breathe in the vapors deeply.  The vapors will break up any congestion fairly quickly.  Don't waste the tea!  When you are done breathing in the steam, strain the needles and then drink it down.  You can add in some lemon and honey to sweeten, if needed.

Have some Yogurt!  Yogurt helps produce antibodies to kill invading organisms.  This makes a great tasteful snack to build the immune system, but also a great preventative choice.  I use only organic variety and plain.  If you need to add some flavor that reach for fruits to sweeten.

Cold and flues will come and go, but try and be as preventive as possible.  Stay clear of processed foods, sugars, additives, and increase your vitamin rich fruits and vegetables.  Increase your good fats for a full belly and add in a few more hearty vegetable stews and soups.  Remember to cover your ears and head on windy days to keep from aggravating your ears or catching head colds.

These natural approaches have been used for ages and passed down from generation to generation.  We have unfortunately become a society of "give me a pill and make it all go away", as soon as we are sick we head to the Doctor for a script.  Allowing your body to heal naturally makes it stronger in the long run, and not as likely to develop a dependency for meds.  Although there is always a time and need for Doctors, if fevers rise, or symptoms continue seek the advice of your Doctor, you never want an infection to set in.  The best way to avoid illnesses is to be proactive in your health, and then use natural methods at the start of a cold.

Eating Well During The Holidays Contributor

When we make changes to eat a more healthier life we tend to "take a break" during the Holidays.  This makes no sense to me, its like falling off the wagon and then your body feels horrible and you have to restart New Years Resolutions.

During the Holidays we tend to make a lot of festive foods and celebration items.  It’s a wonderful time of year to celebrate one another and look forward to what 2013 has to offer.  While celebrating let me try to give you a few tips that will keep down the weight, keep kids healthy, and decrease your stress.

In my Monthly Contributor Post on Happy Mothering I talk about how to eat well during the holidays.
  • First step is to examine your food traditions.
  • What consequences can happen after one holiday party?
  • What are some ideas to be festive & avoid offending foods?
  • Recipe:  Cranberry Almond Upside Down Bars (Gluten Free)
The plans do not have to start out perfect. This is a journey for better health and we make mistakes along the way. The key is to continually move towards your ultimate goals, happiness and better health.
Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

Three Kings Day Giveaway

The Christmas season ends on the Three Kings Day or the Epiphany which traditionally falls on January 6.
Wikipedia defined it as “a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. Western Christians commemorate principally (but not solely) the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Eastern Christians commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.”
The description in the New Revised Standard Version of Matthew 2:1–12 says the Three Wise Men had offered baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
But of course, we cannot offer you those as our giveaway prizes! But we have few gift codes or Paypal cash and other products to give as a way of sharing our blessings!
With the full support of our beloved sponsors and together with awesome bloggers, we are bringing you a humble giveaway to welcome the new year!

Yoga Kids Pose of The Week is Bold Warrior

Part of a healthful lifestyle is being active.  Kids need to see us as a good example and working to keep ourselves fit.  It also helps when the activity is fun and builds character.

My girls love Yoga.  We have a blast working on the different moves.  I have one that is a gymnastic and really can do some power moves.

One thing I love most about Yoga is the peace and strength it brings to the mind and body.  Positive affirmations are important to use daily and help support mental wellness.  I want to raise strong minded, positive, well rounds kids, and love this weeks affirmation to go along with the pose.

Affirmations
In this pose say the following:
  • I am a bold warrior.
  • My body is strong.
  • My mind is strong.
  • My love keeps my family strong.
Wow, right!  Instead of hearing them whining and complaining, help your children see the positive in themselves and around them.  Studies have shown that affirmations help reduce stress and anxiety, I will be writing about this further soon.

Instructions

  1. Jump your feet apart (Steps 1-4 are just like Brave Warrior.).
  2. Stretch your arms straight out of the shoulders, palms down and fingers stretched.
  3. Turn your toes toward the right.
  4. Bend your right knee into a right angle.
  5. Turn your torso forward.
  6. Raise your arms alongside your ears. Feel the support of the earth underneath you and stretch your hands to the sky.
In this week Pose of the week you will also see
Note to Parents and Teachers which is applying shapes and angles through the pose's.
Activity Ideas for Home and Classroom/ Math Medley
Visual Vignettes
Nutrition Tips

Today's Yoga with MyYogaOnline.com

For the Month of December I wanted to do something a little different than my normal routine.  With the Holidays comes events, parties, guest, and stress.  Since I have seen more of my free time flying out the window, I wanted make sure that my workouts gave me a relief from stress instead of adding to it.

Yoga was the perfect option for me.  When I received my new Libre Tea Glass, which I adore, I also received a one month subscription to MyYogaOnline.  I have found it to be a wealth of information, knowledge, and huge library of unlimited yoga videos.

You will find everything to help you learn the terms, poses, and sequences.  You can chose levels from beginner, moderate, intermediate, and advanced.  I liked how they will recommend videos for you, give you videos of the day, and you can favorite videos for easy finds.

I could feel the stress of this Holiday season starting to creep up on me so I signed up for their Eliminating Anxiety: Peace & Power in 8 Stages.  You can do this in a fast track, daily stages, or extend it out.  You get to set the pace.  I received a email every morning giving me the stage of that day.  I loved it.  It gave me helpful information to work on to reduce anxiety and yoga workouts for the day that went along with the program.  I have to say that the helpful tips I learned during last week have carried into this week.  All the Programs are included with membership, and FREE right now to all new members through Dec 25th.

Today's Yoga was a great flowing workout.  Yoga Flo for Peace 40 Minute Practice.  I love to really feel my muscles being stretched and warmed, I know my body was needing this type of exercise.  The last 10 minutes of the video focused on relaxing breathing.  I have to admit I was so calm and relaxed I almost fell asleep.  I now feel focused, relaxed, calm, and stronger.

I then enjoyed a wonderful cup of Berry Green Tea in my Libre Tea Glass.  I use these daily between my Libre Tall Glass and my Libre Tea Mugs.  You will always see me around town with one in my hand or purse.

I am still running, but I have read so much that yoga really goes hand and hand with running.  I will take a month to de-stress my body and still work it hard to start my Calendar year 2013 for Running without injury.

Don't forget to try out MyYogaOnline Free for 25 days.

Seeds of Deception Book

In light of all that has been revealed the last two years I thought it would be great to read one of Jeffrey Smiths books "Seeds of Deception".  In this book he blows the whistle on Industry and Government lies about the safety of GMO foods.  These are not just foods for livestock, but foods on the shelves that you are eating now.

What to expect?
  • Scientist that were offered bribes and threatened.
  • Government employees that were threatened, fired, and harassed.
  • Laboratory animals that suffered lesions, cancer, and death from eating GMO crops.
  • And much more!
The book is 266 pages and I am just starting today.  I have been following Jeffrey Smiths work throughout the Vote 37 campaign and very excited to read his book.  I will be posting a full review when finished, and most likely share important information along the way.

If you are wanting to get started on this book you can also find at amazon here.

Dr. Oz Calls Organic Shoppers Snooty!

Are you an Organic Shopper?  Are you a nonGMO supporter?  Do you look at labels and try to avoid chemicals, pesticides, and other additive?  Well Guess what?  You are a snob, elitist, and snooty, at least that is what Dr. Oz is call you and I.

I have to say that I was highly disappointed a few months back when I felt that Dr. Oz had the chance to really make a difference in the GMO awareness and he totally flunked it.  He took the neutral zone instead of giving the results of studies and calling out on the lies that Monsanto has been saying, in regard to GMO's.  Now to see him make a piece in "Time" Magazine's December 3rd issue is so upsetting.

When friends and family have talked about health and wellness, about 50% of the time I hear, "Dr. Oz said this...", taking his thoughts and opinions as great advice.  Even I really enjoyed his shows and articles in the past.  I am happy to say he will not be getting my support any longer.  He is a DR yes and has on countless times helped change lives for the better, but this has gone down a dark road of no return.

To call people "snooty" and "elitist" because we care about not adding chemicals and junk to our foods is just wrong.  I am not a wealthy person, by no means, and I make sacrifices to buy the food that I do, but that is because there is nothing more important to me than my children and their health.

Also, what will this do to the Farmers and Companies that take work hard to bring us Organic and nonGMO foods?  I love to support the companies that are making strides to provide us cleaner more natural foods.  Dr. Oz is saying they are "not democratic", that only 1% of the country cares about this and we are elitist.  Sorry I think a heck of a lot more care and make great strides to go the Organic route.

I like what the Health Ranger says here quoting Dr. Oz...
"Organic food is great, it's just not very democratic," Dr. Oz declares, as if choosing organic is somehow an affront to America. "You don't need to eat like the 1% to eat healthily," he says. In other words, keep sucking down more GMOs, pesticides, herbicides and chemicals, and you'll be a good little American food slave. Buying organic is anti-American, you're being told." ~~Natural News

Dr. Oz, there is a huge difference and I know many people who changed their illness and diseases by going to an organic and nonGMO diet, cancer survivors, auto immune diseases, allergies, ADHD, ADD, autism, I can go on.

Just like the Health Ranger has said, I too believe he has betrayed his readers and supporters.  What a shame!  I am sure I will be hearing more people saying that DR Oz says GMO's are safe, no need for organic, and the like.  Well I invite you to my GMO News section and see the videos that will explain why a nonGMO diet is so important.

I invite you to read Dr. Oz viciously attacks organic foods and farmers markets, pushes feedlot beef, urges clueless consumers to eat more pesticides and GMO (opinion)

Beyond Bedding Review and Giveaway

As you know, one of my girls is celebrating a Birthday in December, our little Christmas Present!  We were already thinking on getting her some new bedding, something that really reflects her character, nature, and spirit.
I was thrilled when I was asked to review a Children Bedding set from Beyond Bedding.  They have adorable pieces and great quality.  I had Veronica look through the pieces, on the website, so she could give me ideas as to something she would be interested in.  She loved the  Danielle's Daisies Purple Childrens Bedding.  She loves the color Purple and adores Butterflies.  I thought she made a wonderful choice and had it ordered.  She has no idea that she is getting this for her Birthday and I can't wait to surprise her.  We will be celebrating her birthday next week, so in the meantime we have to keep this a secrete.
I have to say that I love the look.  I love the bright colors, the beautiful flowers, and the ribbing.  I wanted to take a quick picture of the set while she was at school, so the bedding is a little wrinkled right out of the bag.  I will be washing and ironing it so it looks perfect when she see it this Friday.

I remember when I got a room make over, as a kid, and I loved my new bedding.  I wanted this to be prefect for her and will be getting a few more matching pieces to really pull it all together.  Beyond Bedding has adorable wall hangings, window pieces, lamps, bed skirts, and so much more.

Thank you Beyond Bedding for a beautiful bedding set!  The only thing I would change is that is came a little wrinkled, but since I wash everything right away this was no problem.

If you are looking to update your children's room than check out the huge selection from Beyond Bedding, you'll be glad you did!
