Going Green Living Friday 3/8

Something to think about. "Human health also depends on a well-functioning ecosystems. We cannot live without the goods and services that nature provides to purify our air and fresh water, maintain soil fertility, pollinate plants, break down waste, provide food and fuel and keep diseases in check."~~IUCN

Green Tip of the Week
Ways to save our water supply.
We need water for a healthy body and healthy environment.
  • Save water by taking showers instead of bath, and have a cheap easy to use time to ring when your time is up.  I have to have an egg timer for when the kids take showers otherwise they would stay in there forever.
  • Try to limit the amount of bubble bath and shampoo you use.  Their chemicals pollute the water and make it harder to clean.  I use Dr. Bronner's Kids Bubble Bath and we use it very sparingly.
  • Never flush your medicines down the drain!!!!  The water filtration sites are not capable of getting Meds out of the water.  Birth control, hormone replacements, antibiotics, steroids, and such have no place in my, your, water.
  • Never pour paint or oil down the drain.  Instead, take them to a local dump to be disposed of correctly.
  • Look into natural approaches to lawn care and skip the chemicals all together.  There are many ways to do this, and I will be giving a few recipes and ideas throughout April, in celebration of Earth Month.
  • Keep our Rivers, Oceans, and Beaches clean.  Take the steps needed to always recycle and throw away waste correctly, and take an extra bag just for cleaning up behind those that need a little help still.

Wondering how clean your water is?  You may not have noticed but your water company sends you a report every year around July.  If you want to make sure you are getting this beneficial information contact your water supplier and make sure.  This usually comes by regular mail, but some companies can have it emailed to you!  Great news!  You get it faster and save some natural resources.

Discovery Cove has a new baby Dolphin!
    Picture from Inside Conservation Blog

"On Monday, February 25, 2013, Discovery Cove welcomed their newest addition to their family - a baby Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. The little guy is now a week old, weighs approximately 44 pounds and is 44 inches long. He is nursing and bonding with his mom, Kendall, both a good indication that he is doing well. This is Kendall’s fourth birth and the 26th dolphin born at Discovery Cove since the park opened in 2000."~~Inside Conservation Blog

    2. I love the don't flush the medicine tip. It amazes me how many people actually do this, or they throw them out, it rains they leach into the ground. Simply bringing them back to the pharmacy and they will properly dispose of them. (we hope).

      1. I know, I don't usually have any to dispose of, but that is where we take ours. So many people don't know that and think its the safest place. People believe the processing plants clean it all, but they are not capable of getting meds out of our water. It has become a greater issue over the last 10 years.

    3. I didn't realize a lot of people did the flush the medicine things. We have an annual or biannual (can't remember) drop off at our local clinic where you can bring in your old meds and they will dispose of them.

    7. This is very helpful and informative. I would never flush things. And oil? No,I have that in an old can and then throw in the trash. Is that ok, acutally? I just love dolphins! I collect them! I would love to go to Sea World!

    8. I have so much medication that we are not going to use. We have a place to take it to but it is quite a trip. I will hold onto it until I run out of room and then take it. I love all the tips, I need to set a timer for my boys, I am the only girl and always the quickest in the shower.

    10. Another tip is to clean up after your dog. This also causes water pollution!

      1. Right you are! I get so frustrated when I am on a run, and see people not picking up after there dog! Also, get green- biodegradable poopy bags! So many people use regular plastic bags when you have a cheaper greener option! Thanks for the tip!

      1. It crazy, but I know so many friends and family that do flush they unused meds. While they think its the right thing to do, so you wont have the meds sitting around, it does affect our water.

    14. The water here is awful. We've started drinking filtered water, but we can't get a full home filter because we're renting.

      1. We are renting too, I know frustrating it can be. We need goo clean water to drink for a healthy body, but so many people have poor quality water. Everything we can do helps. :-)
